Jeffery Dahmer is one of the most notorious serial killers of the modern era. He was responsible for the murder of 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991, earning him the nickname “The Milwaukee Cannibal”. Dahmer committed his first murder at the age of 18 and continued to kill until he was apprehended in 1991. His victims were usually young men who he met in gay bars or on the street. He would offer them money or drugs in exchange for sexual favors, and then he would take them back to his apartment, where he would drug, strangle, and dismember them. He was known for keeping the body parts of his victims in his fridge or freezer, and often indulging in necrophilia and cannibalism.

Dahmer was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and schizotypal personality traits. He had a troubled childhood, with a distant father and an overbearing mother, and he struggled with his homosexuality, which he kept secret from his family and friends. He was also an avid alcohol and drug user, and his mental health deteriorated as he became more and more isolated from society.

In July of 1991, Dahmer was arrested after a 14-year-old victim escaped from his apartment and called the police. Upon searching his apartment, they discovered the remains of 11 of his victims. Dahmer was charged with 15 counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of engaging in lewd and lascivious behavior with a child. He later confessed to an additional two murders and was ultimately sentenced to 15 consecutive life sentences. In 1994, he was brutally murdered in prison by another inmate.

Though Dahmer’s crimes are shocking and reprehensible, it is important to remember that he was a mentally ill individual who was in desperate need of help. His mental illness, coupled with a lack of access to proper care, led him down a path of destruction and violence. If he had been able to receive the help he needed, it is possible that his victims could have been saved.
