The chicken is involved in breakfast, but the pig is committed.

The chicken contributes eggs to the breakfast table and goes about her day.

The pig is tossed in the frying pan, and that’s the end of the pig.

I’ve heard this idea from a few inspiration-type sources. As much as I enjoy its sentiment, one thing has always bothered me about it. The speaker/writer always says that in order to succeed in our efforts we have to be as committed as the pig. But that level of commitment leads to a side of bacon. The pig never again gets to enjoy a roll in the mud.

I saw this hen and her chicks in the jungle village in Peru. Doesn’t she make you proud to be a chicken?

The chicken, however, contributes every day and continues living. She works hard to produce that egg and is reluctant to sacrifice it, yet she does so to earn her next meal.

Don’t be the pig. Don’t sacrifice your life for success. A life without the occasional roll in the mud is no life at all.

Be the chicken. Work hard to write every day (even when it’s the last thing you want to do). Reluctantly (if you dislike sharing as much as me) sacrifice your work to the breakfast table that is the internet. And maybe someone will scatter some grain for you to enjoy.

See you in the coop.

I met these piggy friends in Ireland (they still have some time left to roll in the mud).
