Making Space Is My Superpower

I write about the revelations that have come through to me in the large part through my journey of living with MS (Multiple Sclerosis). It took MS for me to really look within myself and learn to thrive emotionally, spiritually and physically — but these are lessons for every human.

At some point during my journey with MS I developed a remarkable, life-transforming habit of putting more space around things than I might actually need.

What I mean is: spreading things out, not booking as many things as I could, not booking things too closely together, never “squeezing something in”. Always creating an aura of space around things in my diary, around my personal space, my health, my healing, my sense of being.

Originally this was because of the intense anxiety I carried, in the early days of my MS, about the unpredictability of my health and energy…my fears about not being able to show up and deliver — only equalled by my fears of not being able to replenish and recover.

Now I “live” the habit, I have fully embodied it. Not from a fear of losing control (which each of those earlier anxieties I mentioned really points to), not as an “even if I don’t need this extra time and space” (like, when is that ever true?!) — but from a sheer love of space and time that is free for me to use as I need to or desire, that I don’t have to share unless I’m feeling it, that I can claim as my own sacred time. Every damned day. Not as a special treat.

And the whole life itself feels more spacious as a result. I know now that when my energies start to fade, there is no need to panic; when I get a sense inside of me to change direction, I have room to turn; when the world is feeling a little too people-y, I have a space built for cocooning; when an unexpected opportunity comes along, I can show up for it.

Creating extra time just makes sense.

We say that life is “too busy” (and I used to say that too) but we are the creators, the architects, the choreographers of busyness.

I run a thriving business as a wellbeing mentor, meditation teacher, writer, speaker and runner-of-retreats. I am a mamma-bear, which is a business in itself. And taking charge of space (including a big and continuing exploration into what space creation or space-claiming really are) has allowed me to show up: rested, alert and vibrant.

When I didn’t have this practice, when I had in fact less to do because I wasn’t able to take on more, I felt lustre-less, drained and defeated.

Look for space. It’s always there. We live in a spacious world. The sky, the solar system, the whole multiverse is space. Each of us is surrounded by our own electro-magnetic field of energy space. Putting space around something important (like your own being, for instance) is an element of thriving.

Everything thrives in spaciousness.

It could just mean moments, pauses, breaths, lingering over that time with your morning coffee or evening walk, a few minutes extra in bed in the morning, an earlier night with a good book… Or like me you could choose the path of more radical freedom by prioritising your time-outs and valuing them even more than you value all the things that stop them from being possible.

There’s probably a part of you asking you to do that right now.

I offer personal mentoring if you are learning to thrive with MS, CFS or illness — in person (Brisbane, Australia) or by Skype. If you are interested in instinctive living (including a natural, intuitive approach to meditation) building a relationship with your inner guidance, a life loving approach to being human, and tips on radical self-care, you can find more on innatebeing.com.au where I also regularly post blogs and guided meditations.
