How did you come to realize users found this confusing?

We gave test users hypothetical tasks like “Find your friend John Doe, age 45, related to Jane Doe, who lives in Pasadena, California,” (but with more specific names/details) and watched how they approached the problem. With their consent we took screen and audio recordings so they could easily describe confusing/difficult parts of the task.
