Bilbao Airport
Bilbao Airport — a photo by Yuichi

This is an airport located 11 kilometers from Bilbao, in the north of Spain.

Although the surroundings are mountainous here, the port itself is in a valley. The first decisions regarding its construction were made in 1927, but it owes its greatest fame to the new terminal, which was put into use in 2000. It draws attention primarily to the original design of the solid. Its shape resembles a pigeon flying up — two symmetrical wings and a beak (visible especially from the side). This extraordinary project, created by Santiago Calatravas, owes its name. “La Paloma” means a pigeon.

White concrete and glass were used to build the terminal, which makes it look light and clean. Its spacious interiors are filled with light, and the arches on the ceilings resemble the wings of a bird. Initially, the airport authorities looked unfavorably at the project. It is difficult to develop such a characteristic block. Nevertheless, in 2005–2006 the check-in area was modernized, almost doubling the number of commercial facilities.
