Wellington International Airport

Wellington Airport is located 7 kilometers from the capital of New Zealand, Wellington.

This is the third largest airport in New Zealand. It offers domestic connections, but also to Australia and Fiji.

Designed by Studio Pacific and Warren and Mahoney, it is one of the most interesting — and for many one of the most beautiful — airports in the world. It was put into service in 1959.

The international terminal resembles a rock from the outside, hence it is called “Rock”. The form of the building is made of three-dimensional, mosaic panels. Although it makes a cool impression from the outside, inside you can comfortably relax in the cozy, wood-lined departure lounge.

However, the airport is famous not only for its original architecture. The extraordinary nature of New Zealand delighted the filmmakers of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, so they decided to use it for their works. At the airport you can see the decorations in the form of the huge Gollum or Smaug, reminiscent of characters from both movies.
