Former Vice-President Joe Biden, the current front runner among 2020 Democratic hopefuls, introduced a new catchphrase on the campaign trail this week: “Black To The Future With A White Obama.”

The controversial slogan, which seems intended to widen Biden’s base by essentially claiming to be an white black man, struck many people as a bizarre attempt to poach Barack Obama’s popularity.

Asked why he is rolling out the new campaign tagline, “Black To The Future…,”Mr. Biden said on Wednesday: “Just think about it — if you’re black, you should think of me as a white Obama doing more cool stuff. If you’re white and liked Obama, you should consider me a great alternative to black Barack. But if you’re white and didn’t like Obama, I’m just good old ‘Cup of Joe’ with lots and lots of cream. It’s a smart slogan.”

Mr. Biden also claimed that when they ran on the same ticket in 2008, Mr. Obama would often say to him,“Joe, I consider myself the black Biden.” There is no record of the former president making such a statement publicly.

The new white Obama will be appearing with the old black Obama in Chicago in early September.
