*THIS IS ONLY A TEST

This is a test. For the next sixty seconds, this blogging site will conduct a test of the Emergency Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press.

This is only a test.

The free press in your area, in voluntary cooperation with the nation’s independent journalists, television reporters, columnists, political cartoonists, satirists, and advocates of First Amendment rights, have developed this system to protect American writers in all genres and to keep you informed in the event of suppression by federal, state, and local authorities of their rights to free speech — a cornerstone of democracy.

If this had been an actual emergency, and Allan Ishac, or any other American journalist whose rights to free expression are guaranteed by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, was actually detained or imprisoned without warning or underpants, you would have been instructed where to tune in your area for news and official information.

You would have also been asked (by Mr. Ishac’s family and friends) to call the Reporters Committee Legal Defense Hotline at 1–800–336–4243, which is available to all journalists and media lawyers at any time. Alternatively, you could contact the American Civil Liberties Union at 212–549–2500.

Domestic free press advocates would have also suggested that you read the articles below about the rapid deterioration, and eventual elimination, of press freedoms in other “democratic” countries that once protected their own independent media — to demonstrate just how easy it is for the autonomy of a free press to evaporate when it’s under constant attack by an aspiring autocratic ruler (someone like Donald Trump):

This concludes this test of the Emergency Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press on Medium.com. We now return to your regularly scheduled blog posts.
