Internet Safety for Kids — The Internet is a great resource for research, shopping, entertainment communication & to gather information about the whole world. Kids have become tech-savvy in this time, also exposing them to the online world has numerous advantages; it has opened up options and avenues that were previously unimaginable. However, it has also resulted in more rules for internet safety for kids.

Here are a few tips to teach kids to use the internet in a safe manner

  • Never share personal information with anyone

Teach kids to keep their personal information such as Usernames, Passwords, Date of Birth, and Addresses, as private as possible. Some websites might request personal information; make sure that before submitting any forms, they ask parents to confirm the website’s security.

  • Never trust anyone they meet online

Kids are more likely to meet people online through gaming websites, video streaming, and so on. It is critical to discuss with whom kids are interacting online and the nature of those interactions. Teach kids to always treat people they meet on the internet as strangers, no matter how well they believe they know them. Also, they should never share their photos.

  • Report any suspicious activity to the parents and do not respond

To ensure cyber safety, parents can enable kid-friendly browser mode. It is also critical to instill in the kid the expectation that if someone behaves inappropriately towards them online, they should immediately report it to an adult. In turn, the adult can block the user and report them on that particular platform.

  • Install and keep security software up to date

While there is no way to be completely safe while using the internet, installing security software is the best option. These programs are important because they alert users to any potential dangers that a website may cause when downloading a file or visiting a non-secure website. Make the kid understand that any security software warning should be taken seriously. Also, always update applications and operating systems because many of these updates contain critical patches that address security flaws.

  • Set a time limit

Long periods of computer use can take a toll on their wrists, back, hips, eyes, and brain. Kids need to take computer breaks regularly. Set a time limit based on their needs (study, games, documentaries) and make sure the screen is at an appropriate distance (16–30 inches). Also, check if they are seated in a comfortable and ergonomic position.

Above all, it is critical to foster trust with kids to promote safe internet usage. If the kid feels trusted, they are more likely to talk about their online activities and share information about online content and contacts that worry them.

A calm, non-judgmental, and open conversation can give kids the confidence that they can trust their parents no matter what.
