Bait and Switch

Term

Originally a sales tactic to lure customers with specific claims about the quality or low prices of items that turn out to be unavailable, to then upsell to similar, pricier items.

In politics, legislation and proposals that suggest minor changes with simplistic titles (the bait), which are then introduced into the legislative process with substantially changed wording (the switch) at a later date in an attempt to smooth the passage of a controversial or significant proposal.

“Look into my eyes, not around my eyes”, etc.

Term

A field of study that examines the psychological, social and emotional factors influencing economic decision-making, challenging the assumption of rationality in individual economic choices.
