Heavenly Assurance — What’s in your Wallet?
You’ve served God faithfully for a number of years. You named Him your Life Leader Extraordinaire! You loved God, and then you totally failed Him. You two had been through everything together — failed University courses, separation and single parenthood, financial crises, bouts of shame and guilt. You’re like, “How can I do this to God after everything He’s brought me through?” Then The Saviour calls with heavenly assurance, and you break into your happy dance.
What’s in your soul wallet? What are you feeling deep down inside — the place where nobody knows except you? Do you have the blessed hope that the Lord makes available to you through His word bursting out of your billfold? Or are you fanning away the moths from an empty purse? I think everyone’s spiritual bank account gets overdrawn from time to time and you just feel so broken down that you just want to stay in bed for a month and let the rest of the world just pass by and forget about you. Believe me, it’s easy to give in to the urge to just not care, to just lock off the emotions and be numb or cold for a while. It’s alluring and addictive. It allows for you to be totally selfish and wallow in self-pity.
What are you feeling deep down inside — the place where nobody knows except you?
The thing is, that feeling also allows you to make some bad decisions because you feel you don’t have the energy for anybody else except “essential personnel”. Everybody else (shrugs shoulders), you don’t really care what they want to say or do. My introversion allows me to do that quite well. “Going MIA”, I call it. It’s a bad habit. Or is it? I’m not entirely sure. Sometimes I just need a time-out from adulthood. I’m sure I’m not the only one, right?
As attractive as running away may seem, it’s not a viable solution to being overwhelmed, stressed out, and just simply frustrated with living a limited life. We need to get out of our own flawed heads and into God’s perfect word where you can fill your soul wallet with as many assurances as you want.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. — 1 John 1:9
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. — Psalm 23:4
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. — Ephesians 2:8–9
And this verse has recently become my favourite…
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. — Jeremiah 29:11
Being spiritually broke is hell — pun intended. But the solution is simpler than going for a loan at a bank and more certain than winning the lotto. Get the Heavenly Assurances from the most wonderful, loving and forgiving Bank President this world had ever known. So, let me ask again…
