This is the Morality vs Pragmatism discussion — ‘should’ being a statement of a moral position; your focus on actions and outcomes expressing pragmatism.
You called it.
This story is in large part about this very thing: the morality and definition of honesty, disclosure, and informed choice (consent) vs the pragmatism of what is prerequisite to establishing a relationship, such that honesty, disclosure, and choice have any real value.
For someone who is subject to broad and extreme prejudice (but ‘passes’), this dichotomy presents a real dilemma.
