Make Shit and Sell It

Here’s the plan. I haven’t told anyone but you, so keep it under your hat.

Nothing makes me happier than making things and then selling them. The act of creation is one thing, but the selling, the selling makes me real because someone else is saying “this is good enough to spend money on”. Which in turn means I am good enough. Yes it’s a sad way of getting validation, but my self validation nozzle is busted so I turn to others to get it.

Usually I make things tech related. Websites, Apps, Computers. I want to try something new. I want to step into that scary world called …art.

Being the me that I am, I am absolutely useless just “doing” something. How do you just “do” it without a goal, a quest, a something that must be fulfilled? So I am not just going to “do” art, I am going to apply some principles to my doing so that I can get to the “selling” part as soon as possible.

I can craft. That terrarium in the picture, I made. The mead I make is craft. There’s more. I can do that stuff. Never tried to sell it, but people have told me I should. If I fail at art, I can always fall back on craft.

Is making art specifically for the purpose of selling it means it is still art? Or is it craft? Graphic artists still make art don’t they? And tattoo artists? I am pretty sure if the art thing is unique then it is art. So I am going to put “unique” in the list of things this stuff must be.

So what is the quickest way to learn how to art? How can I apply Pareto’s Law and get to the meaty art bits without wasting my time on dross? These are the questions I will research so I can reach my goal of selling an art thing by the end of 2016.
