Cancel Culture is Good Thing

People have long complained about the need to be politically correct. Many of these people have claimed that asking them to censor their inner-most thoughts is a violation of their freedom of speech. To be clear, people have the right to say what they want. The opposite is also true: people have the right to feel offended by violent and bigoted language. No one should have the right to a captive audience.

The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) maintains surveillance of broadcast content and they have a standard for what will and will not be accepted.

“ Expressions of views that do not involve a ‘clear and present danger of serious, substantive evil’ come under the protection of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and freedom of the press and prevents suppression of these expressions by the FCC. According to an FCC opinion on this subject, ‘the public interest is best served by permitting free expression of views.’ This principle ensures that the most diverse and opposing opinions will be expressed, even though some may be highly offensive,” (The FCC and Freedom of Speech).

The FCC supports freedom of speech, even when it is offensive. However, they do not allow language that threatens or inspires violence of any kind. They also are cautious of information that is accessible to children.
