Who’s responsible for the mass shootings?
Anyone who owns a gun.
Think about it this way, the people who don’t own guns would for the most part have no problem making them entirely illegal. If no Americans owned a gun, the second amendment could be repealed and the constitution could be changed. There would be no guns in the US at all. It would virtually eliminate the mass shootings overnight. The only thing keeping guns in this country is your desire to own one.
Secondly, by owning a gun, you are sending money to gun manufacturers. That money is being used to lobby congress via the NRA to prevent new regulation. The NRA has fought against any and all reform. They have even blocked government research into gun violence. The situation is so out of control that we have had an average of one mass shooting in a school per week since Sandy Hook and not a single piece of legislature has been passed to address the issue. Deaths from firearms will likely pass traffic accidents by 2015. And it’s your fault.
Owning a gun should be like a professional credential. We don’t let people just do surgeries on other people in their basement. Why? Because it’s life or death and people would be killed. We shouldn’t just let people have guns. It’s a weapon that’s incredibly dangerous and only the most responsible adults should have access to them. Gun owners are directly responsible for this. It’s their job to speak up and create the standards for their community. If you are a responsible gun owner, you should WANT to prevent incompetent people from owning them. You should want to lower the death by firearm rates in the US. You should be deeply concerned about eliminating every single accidental child death from poorly secured firearms. As long as you don’t, and you continue to support the lobbying efforts of the NRA by your gun and ammo purchases, you have blood on your hands.
You may believe that there is no solution, that there’s no law that can be created to prevent these deaths. Well, you better think of something. (Not this.) Because every time a child is killed by a firearm in this country, it’s because you value your ability to have a gun over that child’s life. You are sacrificing children to the altar of your choices. If that wasn’t true, people would simply hand over all of their guns today and make gun ownership illegal because nothing is worth losing human life over.
Instead of focusing on the shooter after each tragedy, we should be asking this question to gun owners every single time: What are you going to do to prevent this from happening again?
