Eid al-Adha is a joyous occasion for Muslims worldwide, marked by the important tradition of Qurbani. This sacrificial act commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (peace be upon him) unwavering faith in Allah. An essential aspect of Qurbani is distributing the meat, ensuring the blessings are shared with those in need and loved ones.

The Importance of Qurbani Meat Distribution

The spirit of Qurbani extends beyond the sacrifice itself. It’s about sharing blessings and expressing gratitude for Allah’s provisions. Distributing the meat allows you to:

  • Fulfill the Sunnah: Sharing Qurbani meat is a recommended practice (Sunnah) in Islam.
  • Spread joy and alleviate hunger: Donating a portion to the less fortunate provides much-needed sustenance during Eid festivities.
  • Strengthen community bonds: Sharing meat with family and friends fosters social connections and strengthens community spirit.

The Three Qurbani Hissa: Sharing Responsibly

While there are no strict rules on the exact division, Islamic scholars generally recommend dividing the Qurbani meat into three shares:

1. The Recipient’s Share (Sahibul Qurban):

  • This portion, typically one-third of the meat, is reserved for the person who performed the Qurbani. They can enjoy some with their immediate family, fulfilling the Sunnah of consuming sacrificial meat.

The Share for Relatives and Friends (Al-A’ibah wa al-Fuqara’)

  • Another third of the meat is intended for relatives, neighbors, and friends. Sharing blessings brings joy and strengthens bonds within the community. It’s a way to include those who may not be able to afford their own sacrifice.
  • Consider prioritizing close relatives with financial limitations or those living far away.

3. The Share for the Needy and Poor (Al-Fuqara’ wa al-Masakin):

  • The final third is dedicated to the less fortunate. This could be distributed to local charities, orphanages, soup kitchens, or directly to those in need within your community.
  • Prioritize families facing hardship and ensure the meat reaches those who would truly benefit from it.

“ The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever slaughtered the sacrifice before the prayer, he just slaughtered it for himself, and whoever slaughtered it after the prayer, he slaughtered it at the right time and followed the tradition of the Muslims.”

Additional Considerations for Distribution

  • Freshness of Meat: Ensure the meat is distributed or stored hygienically to maintain freshness.
  • Respecting Dietary Preferences: Be mindful of potential dietary restrictions or allergies when distributing the meat, especially to those unfamiliar with the family.
  • Delivery Option: Consider if you need to arrange delivery or offer pick-up points for recipients.
