Dustbin in the room!
Ever walked into a room which has lots of scrap lying around, paper clippings, rubber-bands, balls of newspaper, some hair, some sachet, and some candy wrappers? And in another which may not be decorated royally but there is no (or very less) scattered items from the list above.
Try to remember what was the difference in both the rooms (except one belonged to a bachelor university guy and the other one to a sophisticated lady).
The dustbin!
Yes, the dustbin. I noticed this when I was forced by my girlfriend (now wife) to put a dustbin in the room. Suddenly I had a place to throw all the garbage instead of “temporarily” putting it on the floor from where it would be, supposedly, cleaned up “later”. We all know when is that “later”. And just like that the room was cleaner and lot more tidy.
Point of my story?
Am I a dustbin salesman? That I am totally going to consider if this piece of writing goes famous and sale of dustbins skyrockets, but there is another aspect to it:
The dustbin in your life , the dustbin in your mind!
The whole mindset behind keeping a bin in the room is the anticipation that there will be garbage, there will be scrap there will be stuff that you will need to take out as waste. Just that much of thought changes the status of clutter.
Now draw this analogy to life, the clutter being all the setbacks, all the unexpected events.
When you put a place in your mind with the anticipation of this clutter, you are more ready for it than when you don’t.
It may be a project you are handling, a startup or a dream product or even a luxury trip with family or friends, when you make place for unwanted events in your mind you set yourself up for the case when things might not go exactly as planned, and when things go south you will be able to handle that better as compared to when you were only expecting a fairy tale style story and there happens to be some demons there.
This does not at all mean that it will solve all the problems, no, you still need to empty the bin and dust the room time to time. But yes, this sure will help you keep your room much more tidy!
Happy cleaning!
