Here we all sit on fine lines; defying gravity. (But look, there’s a plane!)

Defined by many, Mental Health is simply the condition of your mind with regard to your psychological, emotional, and social well-being. The World Health Organization (WHO), however, gets more in-depth and personal:

Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.

So how does one get to maintain his or her well-being: Psychologically, emotionally, and socially? Let’s try science, data, and analysis.

To Realize & Register: Natural Selection

The sharks’ ability to only catch the slowest fish lends to Charles Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection — that only the strongest and fittest survive; assuring each generation will pass on the stronger genetic traits of those who survive; further strengthening the species and the health and numbers of possibly millions of spawning convict tangs (reef fish).

The balance of nature and the health of the population of fish here really show the benefit, of the pressure from predators, to evolve.

To Cope & Manage: How Culture Drives Behaviors

When you move to a different country, there are 3 ways that you can relate to the culture: Confront, complain, or conform.

When you confront, you believe that your behaviors are the right behaviors.

When you complain, what happens is that you will isolate yourself into social bubbles of foreigners living in segregation with the society.

When you adapt your way to behave, when you conform to the whole society, then you can truly benefit from diversity — but that implies that you are observing, learning, understanding the behaviors of others, and adapting your own so that it fits with the behaviors of the society you’re in.

We all see the world through cultural glasses. The lens through which your brain sees the world shapes your reality.”

— Julien S. Bourrelle

That complex whole, apparently, is culture and the evolution of human behavior.

Energy Through Time: You are What You Actually Eat

When drugs and psychoanalysis were not always the best course of treatment for a variety of mental illnesses, an extensive program of research began to look into the causes and treatment of mental illness.

With a team of scientists, it was that many psychological problems can be traced to biochemical imbalances in the body.

With these patients, Dr. Pfeiffer achieved unprecedented success in treating a wide range of mental problems by adjusting diet and providing specific nutritional supplements for those conditions where deficiencies exist. This book documents his approach.

To Create & Conquer: Your Brain on Video Games

When we say video games, most of you think of children. It’s true: 99% of children do play video games. But let’s be frank. When the kids are in bed, who is in front of the PlayStation? Most of you are. The average age of a gamer is 33 years old.

But we’ll talk about the illnesses some other time, for this month hit really close to home. My cousin, brilliant and talented, would’ve been 38 years old.
