Public relations vs Journalism

Public Relation and journalism both of them deal with the public and interview them but everyone has his own purpose to look forward to achieve it. Although both of them have his strategies and theories, journalist and public relations practitioner must have strong communications skills and the ability to write clearly.

Nowadays Public relations become the main part of the organizations. Because the main objective of the profession of public relations is to build a reputation and maintain it. Also another objective it to earn the public’s trust.

There are many roles of the profession of public relations, for example: the communication between the organization and the employees, public affairs, crisis management and the events management.

Unlike Public relations, journalism’s role is the news coverage, the events coverage, investigations for information, write stories, coverage of public issues through interviews with the people or with the organizations that are related to the issues.

There are many examples of public relations and journalism, I chose six examples on different media outlets.

Starting with Disney in this video the public relations campaign made an awesome show in a shopping mall with a relatively low budget, by Mickey, Minnie, and other Disney characters surprised the shoppers. This kind of stunt will enhance its reputation.

On the other hand, this photo shows another example of public relations campaign, which is about the shortage of the blood donation, by dropping the letters A, B and O from the Brands and Street Signs logos to highlight National Blood Week. This campaign was successful it got 10,000 new donors between Friday and Monday.

These photos show public relations activity by response to the social media website immediately in the same time the customer posted the tweet. That will give the organization better reputation. In these photos a boy traveling on Virgin train used Twitter to ask for help when he was stuck in the bathroom.

In this video the Samsung Company made a good example of the role of public relations in the community responsibilities by saving lives by using safety trucks. These trucks have Samsung screen that broadcast a live video that let the driver in the car behind the truck see the area in the front of the truck. This gives him the ability to decide whether if he can pass the truck or not it can see it at day or night.

This photo by NEW YORK TIMES shows an example of journalism, which is coverage of U.S. presidential race by New York Times.

In this Photo USA TODAY newspaper give another example for journalism. The writer here gave his opinion in public opinion case.

Lastly, after we saw these examples basically we can say Public relations and Journalism have differences more than the similarities. Although they all need each other to reach their goals.
