A MOSTLY FACTUAL LAMB STORY

Look at the leaping lambs!
Playing queen of the mountain
On stacked bales of hay
Shoving their way to the top
And then flying off
Landing with a
Bounce
And a bleat
One two three four
Five
And round they go again
They wouldn’t be leaping
If their moms hadn’t been
Rescued
They would be in
Danger
Their moms would be in
Crowded pens
Producing baby after baby
In a lamb mill
Here the moms can be sheep
And keep their babies
Here the lambs can live longer
Than four or six months
They can play
Be as silly as they want
Once in a while they
Go check on mom
Maybe get a sip of milk
The five lambs
Go gamboling together
Across the grass
Nibble on the dandelions
The moms lie down
In the field
Doze
With eyes half open
Making sure their babies
Are safe
Perhaps the moms
Wander aimlessly
Around the field together
Grazing a little while they
Keep track of their babies
Hear the moms baa-ing
I’m here
Hear the babies bleating back
I’m here too
Or perhaps the moms are sharing their
Feelings
With one another
Happy to have a moms’
Support group
Children can be challenging
And noisy
Listen to those lambs
Bleating
Expressing themselves
Look at me
Look at that
This is such fun!
Look at them leaping
Suddenly popping straight up
Or sideways
For no particular reason
Bouncing
Pop pop pop
Fluffy white jumping beans
The day warms up
The moms baa at their lambs
Calling them
They lead them into the shade
Perhaps it’s time to nurse
Perhaps it’s time to nap
The lambs try to pop up
One last time
They bleat and yawn
And then sink into sleep
