A DIY Design Education

Hi, Katherine, thanks for your article. Your take on building your own curriculum is on point. A formal education is not necessary in order to design, but designers of any sort need to learn what works, what doesn’t, and why. I’d like to suggest adding some books on design principles to your list. I recommend Design Basics by David Lauer & Stephen Pentak, and Principles of Form and Design by Wucius Wong, to begin with. Knowing the fundamentals — how we see, perceive and process visual information — is the basis for creating effective designs for any platform and medium.
