Missing you, not even knowing how you look like…
I accidentally came across one of my secret blogs today. It was so secret that I forgot I even wrote it.
Is it just me or have the quality of blogs declined?
I miss the days when blogs were all the rage and people wrote because they loved writing. Those were the days when reading the comments section meant more insights, more arguments and debates, and more opinions. Sure, there were some crazy grammar nazis even back then, but people did not mind them. Everyone knew grammar nazis existed in the comments because they were too stupid to compose their own thoughts and write a witty blog post of their own. Hence they correct your grammar to stay relevant.
I miss the days when reading a blog post from a friend or a total stranger gave you a thrill not unlike sneaking a peek at an entry of a diary of your crush. Did you ever had the pleasure of crying at some stranger’s story without feeling the urge to check it on snopes.com? Or perhaps followed somebody’s love story as it unfolded. Back in the time where storylines were not contrived and made up, people actually lived life and blogged about it. So you find yourself cheering on when he finally tells that cute officemate about his love, or asking his best friend out on a date. Or when finally, she finds the courage to leave.
Have you ever kept a reading list on your own blog so that you could start everyday at the office blog hopping and getting updates. I checked all the blogs I had on my blogroll, and was not surprised to see ALL of them are now dormant. Last entries on some were dated 2007. The most recent final was written in 2011. And you have to wonder how they are now, how have they lived their lives. It used to be that they told you about their most private thoughts, and you felt like you knew them even without seeing their faces. Now you can only wonder who they really were and who they have become.
Have you had the pleasure of reading blogs when there was no such thing as a “professional blogger”, and ad words was still two words. This was a time when blogs were pretty much written for the love of writing, instead of picturing that Google check in your mind.
At a time when people on Facebook prefer to “read” images, inspirational quotes, and other stuff as long as it does not exceed 100 words. Or at a time when people prefer 140 characters, I simply had to ask. Is blogging going the way of cassette tapes and vinyl records?
