“Social norms”… you mean the idealistic image of what an American is?

Hi Trevor — My point is when you act outside of social norms (as defined by the prevailing culture), you can expect repercussions. I never said the social norms are idealistic, respectable, superior, or “white”, and I am not justifying the repercussions. I am not saying that common African-American culture is unjustified or wrong. I am saying that people are people, and our attributes include irrationality and fearfulness. So please stop acting surprised when people purposely act, dress, or speak in ways to get attention, and then they get it.
