It revealed that Liberian politicians owned logging companies in Liberia, despite this being illegal. The logging industry has been fraught with war for fourteen long years that has claimed the lives of thousands. It’s also believed that the logging industry has become a way to traffic arms. This has resulted in logging companies hiring militias and working alongside Liberian military to combat a rebel group called “Liberians United for the Return of Democracy (LURD). However, Global Witness is leaving it up to the Liberian Government to decide on the punishment for these corrupt politicians. We hope that the uncovering of this illegal activity will help bring peace to the people of Liberia and save lives.
