U.S. Support

Global Witness did an expose on environmental activists in Honduras that revealed it is one of the deadliest places to be an environmental activist. Global Witness found that over 120 people have died since 2010 in their quest for saving Honduras’s natural resources, and many more have been threatened, attacked or imprisoned for their belief and actions.

The investigation revealed that the U.S. is one of the monetary supporters for some of the Honduran state forces, who have a hand in these killings. In spite of the community’s opposition to the U.S. support for the state forces, they continue to funnel money to the Honduran police and military.

However, Congress is working on changing this approach to Honduras. Their goal is to be more supportive of local activists and to promote human rights.
