Driven to find a cure

East Syracuse Chevrolet is open six days a week, closing only on Sundays, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Most days, it closes at 8 p.m. During the month of March, Derek Ciciarelli spent every minute the dealership was open on the sales floor.

All 20,070 of them.

Ciciarelli’s mother, Marilyn, lost her fight with Alzheimer’s disease in March 2016. To celebrate her memory, Ciciarelli worked every last minute of the month and donated part of his commission from sale to the Alzheimer’s Association. He said that according to his fitness device that he logged between 10 to 12 miles each day.

On April 5, he presented a check to Central New York Chapter Chief Executive Officer Cathy James for $1,710, which will provide Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs to the community.

In addition to his own contributions, Ciciarelli kept a canister on his desk and asked customers to fill it. He matched every dollar collected out of his own pocket.
