Civic Technology 101

Way to go,Colin!

  1. Is your community more or less closely knit? Why or why not?

My community, the video game community, is both close and far apart. Gamers may be far apart geographically, but they find ways to come together and talk about games through online applications and social media sites, including Reddit. However, gamers who play the same games, play on the same systems, or attend the same conventions, tournaments or events can also build their own kinds of communities that can be close knit or far apart. However, those that are far apart don’t tend to last long, so many of the people who participate tend to become more close knit. For example, the gamers who attend NYU’s Game Center are probably close knit. Those who play competitive fighting games at NYU’s Game Center are going to be without a doubt a very close knit group.

2. How do you plan on bringing your community closer together?

I plan to bring a conversation to the community that hasn’t been explored much: diversity. There is a common thread among gamers that there isn’t much real journalism about video games besides reviews and coverage of certain kinds of events or trade shows. I want to bring the community together to have a critical conversation about the future of our community as a whole. This is the essence of my project within this community.

3. Would your community benefit from “civic technology”? Give an example of an existing piece of technology (or something you come up with) that would help your community succeed.

I feel that my community would benefit from civic technology. Taking the idea that gamers are frustrated from the lack of “journalism” in “video game journalism,” one thing that could help with this problem is to create a space or a website or a discussion blog that would give people the space to address the issues within the community and industry overall that they care about. Having it moderated also keeps the conversation as a discussion of ideas as opposed to a shouting match or a trolling streak.
