Totally agree she is a Mary-Sue character ……..but that is because not enough time is given to her character development — she is an add on to the franchise — a bad attempt at the producers of the show to try and give women a different role other than as a wife, mother or sexual plaything. I mean good on them for trying but…… With Luke there was a lot of scenes where we see his background, his training etc etc. No storyline was given to Rey of her background, training etc like they did with Luke. No way would I identify with her because she is a totally 2 dimension character. I also believe there are a lot of instances of male characters being Mary-Sue (as it is just a name to describe a perfect fantasy charcater — why do we have to have a male equivalent name — it is just a name right?) Van Damme, Indiana Jones — I mean he is an archaelogist for crying out loud(!!!), Any film where the man must avenge the death of his wife and/or children — and he was just the average family man before then — a classic example is all of Liam Neesons latest movies — Taken(?). I mean let’s face it……the reason why films are produced these days is to make money…….character development takes time and money…if producers and studios can get away with having 2 dimensional characters and still make money they will.
