When I picked up the first book of the series Rainbow Magic: The Jewel Fairies during reading time in first grade, I was in awe. Rachel Walker and Kirsty Tate were the protagonists who helped fairies protect their kingdom from the wicked Jack Frost, and I admired how kind, clever, and generally perfect they were. Not only that– I saw them as my heroes, and I wanted nothing more than to be like them. This was reflected in my writing, where I created characters that looked nothing like me. Instead, they were white like Rachel and Kirsty, blonde, and blue-eyed.
