We Aren’t in the 50’s Anymore

A spin-off opinion article written for my English class. Spun off from an article about Donald Trump and abortion.

It’s crazy to think that it’s 2016 and people still believe that men are superior to women. Donald Trump — the infamous Republican candidate running to become the president of the United States — thinks he has the right to have a say in what women do with their lives.

Feminism: what exactly is it? It has taken the world by storm over the last couple of years.

Feminists all over the world believe that women should be treated equal to men in every aspect of life.

We do not exclude women from this movement for any reason. Your religion, culture or race will not stop you from being part of the idea of equality.

The idea that some people believe that there are such things as “women jobs” and “men jobs” is absolutely mind boggling.

If a job requires the employee to lift heavy items or to be qualified in specific areas, people today believe that means the job is destined for a man.

What an utter joke? Your job should not be determined by the gender you identify as.

I once applied for a job as a chef’s assistant and a bus girl at the same time. While I didn’t get the job, the reason I heard from a friend and an employee there was what surprised me the most.

“It’s because you have to lift heavy things.” She had said to me.

The employers of the restaurant deemed me “incapable” of lifting heavy items because I am a female.

It’s crazy to think that in other countries around the world, the right to have an education, jobs or vote are ripped away from women.

Why do so many women have the simple privileges in life taken away from them?

There is one ridiculous common aspect in all these situations: men are feeling threatened by women.

Isn’t that crazy? Men are feeling attacked at the thought of women being equal to them but is it backed by a reason?

Is there a good reason why men should feel this way? The answer is a simple “no”.

Men and women should empower each other. All people want to do in life is succeed and find their purpose; doing so should not be a competition with others, especially not between genders.

Men should not have the right to think that they can oppose the idea of women becoming equal to them.

It’s 2016. We are not in the 50’s anymore where men were treated as superiors to women and it’s time for everyone to realize that.

Some people do not believe — or acknowledge — the fact that some women are paid less than men even when they have the same job.

How ridiculous is that?

There is no reason why women should not have the same salary as the men that do the same thing.

Imagine this: a woman is paid less than a man for no apparent reason. When it’s brought up, nothing happens in favour of the woman.

If a man was in that situation –which, let’s be honest, probably wouldn’t happen- the odds are in his favour of his hourly pay increasing.

Something that is well noticed around the world is that in governments, more times than not, men make up more than half of the members.

Is it because more men run for government? Not necessarily. Although there are many women running for positions, many of them are not elected or appointed.

Many people believe that a woman wouldn’t make the right decisions in governments because they’re too forgiving or too emotional.

Is it crazy to think that it might just be what governments need today?

Women will take more aspects into consideration while making decisions for others, whether or not they mean to. It’s almost like an instinct.

What’s wrong with the idea of a woman being a member of government? Even if people think that they wouldn’t do as well as a man, that isn’t a reason for them not to be an active member.

Women deserve to have the same opportunities in life as men do.

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
