September 25th is Ataxia Awareness Day.

‘Ataxia’ is the name for a group of neurological disorders. Many symptoms of Ataxia mimic those of being drunk, such as slurred speech, stumbling, falling and incoordination.

There are many different types of ataxia that affect people in different ways.

I created a daily photo challenge based around life with Ataxia, giving you an opportunity to share your struggles and stories of life with this illness. The challenge runs for the entire month of September!

How does it work?

You create social media posts about life with Ataxia based on a prompt, or theme, of the day. There’s no right or wrong way to interpret the prompts. It doesn’t matter how you take part, your story is personal and so is the way you post. It can be a daily video, a post on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or whatever platform you use.

The most important aspect is to use the hashtag:

#AtaxiaAwareness

A hashtag doesn’t sound like it will make a difference, but it helps people who need it search and have access to information on ataxia.

What’s the point of this challenge?

To raise awareness on all social media platforms, get our stories out there and build our community. To bring together people in similar situations together so that they don’t need to face their illness alone.

Social media is a great tool for raising awareness and using our voices. It has the power to create an impact in the world. Ataxia is isolating, and social media can help. We are a community of people who are going through very similar things, and we can use social media to support each other.

One of the biggest problems people with ataxia face is other people not understanding it. Rather than get frustrated with the lack of understanding, social media can help us share with the world what we deal with on a daily basis.

We can raise awareness by sharing our stories.

What if I can’t keep up with posting daily?

Don’t worry about it. It’s not compulsory and doesn’t matter if you skip a day here or there. Always do what feels right for you and your health.

Everyone has different levels of symptoms.

It’s all about showcasing who you are and connecting with the community.

And have fun!.

September photo challenge

You can buy the shirt on redbubble with all proceeds going to Ataxia UK in September.

Please Share!.
