Fellow metal head here! I was in two bands with a good friend of mine, of Jewish descent, and she felt marginalized in the metal community. A self-proclaimed white supremacist neo-nazi was kind of a big deal in the local metal scene in 2008 and would host these backyard shows with good turn out. He wanted us to play, but my drummer said she felt threatened and I totally backed her. What surprised me was one of my black friends (in another metal band) defended the guy, saying he was actually a really nice guy and the neo-nazi stuff was all show. His band (my black friend) played the backyard show a few times and they never had problems.
I don’t regret the decision. If it really was all show, what as*hole would act that way while not really believing those things? If it wasn’t, was he secretly seething inviting a Jewish drummer and black guitarist to his home just for the crowd they would bring? Either way, f*ck that guy. And I felt my friend was condoning that behavior by playing the show.
Anywho, enough about me. What you think of the use of confederate flags on Pantera’s albums/posters, and other metal bands use of it?
