In 2016, Let’s Show Them We’re Not “The Lazy Generation” and Do Something About Our Media

Mainstream media tells us that our food is healthy, that our beauty products aren’t toxic, that the people in our ads actually look like those people in real life and that the media has our best interests at heart. It’s time that we take back mainstream media.

FLURT is an international magazine for socially conscious young people. My goal is that one day we’ll be THE choice on mainstream stands for those who care about what goes on in their food, their products and the world around them. I know I’m not the only one who wishes we could pick up a magazine with real bodies and real issues beside the glossies filled with photoshop and gossip. We still have lots of work to do to reach this goal, but I’m confident that in the new year we’ll be on the path towards getting FLURT on checkout stands.

We tell ourselves that the situation with our media isn’t that big of a deal and we can’t do anything about it anyway, but it IS a big deal and we CAN do something about it. So many people at FLURT are already making an impact. I love when people tell me how much FLURT means to them, how it’s changed their life and how they’ve made lifelong friends from it. But since we have very little funding, we’re volunteer run and many of us can’t contribute as much as we’d like due to other obligations, we need YOUR help. We have great people around the world who are working as hard as they can to help FLURT grow, but in order for us to get on stands we need a push to get the word out, get more people involved and get more funding to reach our goal.

So how can you help? Here are 3 easy ways to help us grow FLURT in the new year and put a healthy magazine on mainstream stands:

1. Contribute your talent
Love writing? Vlogging? Organizing events? Protesting for what you believe in? If you do it, chances are we can use it. Keep our community going by volunteering your time to create articles, short films, photo spreads, FLURT meetings and other events in your city. Get involved by filling out the form on the bottom of the homepage, or just shoot me an email at amanda@flurtmag.com.

2. Donate $1 a month
Even $1 a month helps towards our goal of getting FLURT on stands. Not only is printing a magazine expensive, but we also need to pay the web designer, the magazine designer and the countless volunteers who work for free, including myself. But we do it for free because we think it’s important, and if you do too consider giving up a few dollars a month to keep us going. You can donate here.

3. Share FLURT with your friends
Sharing is caring. If you think other people might like FLURT, share this article, share another article you like or share the magazine that’s free and easy to download. Even if you don’t have time or money to contribute, just getting the word out helps us achieve our goal and we’re super thankful that you think it’s important that other people know about it too.

This new year, let’s opt to tell the truth. Let’s show the naysayers that we’re not “the lazy generation” and do something about our media and our world. Because YOU can make a change in your media. You ARE in control of what you want to see in your food, your products and your planet. Even by reading this article YOU ARE making a change in the media you consume. And from the bottom of my heart, I deeply appreciate your choice.
