Global Village

The global village today, has become an ever-changing platform, where people encounter one another, and are able to receive information, creating a point of view as well as a sense of expression. Marshall McLuhan discusses the concept of the global village, as a tribe, as the tribe evolves, it gets rid of individualism, and is no longer concerned with self-definition.

Which create valid points towards the contemporary characteristics of the global village today, with interaction becoming a form of communication amongst people in the global village, it creates common understanding, opinions and values. This rids of individualism and self-definition, in global village, however it can also cause conflicts if these common values aren’t shared.

With these commonly shared opinions and values, it is clear that it can create awareness and effect towards issues and events that build us as a society. Enabling information to spread at an immediate pace, it builds connections amongst one another. Information is therefore, travelled quickly amongst the global village, making it more convenient for people to informed and knowledgeable on certain topics and issues.

The new modalities of media today, can be heavily associated with social media. Social media is one of the many forms in which we receive news, information and connect with other people. As social media becomes heavily involved in our lives, it does make us wonder how we project ourselves on it. Social media has allowed people to project themselves in anyway they wish to, for multiple reasons, including aesthetics, appeal and entertainment.

With all these reasons combined together, it creates this whole façade of how people approach social media and the media today. This deceptive outwards appearance of how we want to be projected in real life coincides with our habits on social media. As social media becomes a major part of today’s media, it’s creates this sense of how media is portrayed.
