Delaware is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic or Northeastern regions of the United States. It spreads over an area of 5,130 square kilometre and is the 6th most densely populated state of America. An iceberg about the size of the state of Delaware split off from Antarctica’s Larsen C ice shelf sometime between July 10 and July 12.

There is no doubt in the fact that humans have exploited earth to an extent that it is responding back. While our ancestors have been around for about six million years, the modern form of humans only evolved about 200,000 years ago. And in these 200,000 years, we have destroyed the 4.5 billion years old history of the earth. Can you imagine?

If you spend one day in Beijing breathing the air, it has the same health effects as smoking 21 cigarettes. Woah!

A new study by researchers at the University of Toronto found that 25% of cars and trucks are causing about 90% of pollution from the vehicle fleet. The scientists made on-the-spot measurements of 100,000 vehicles as they drove past air-sampling probes (including a for the first time a proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer; it provided the time resolution required for the plume capture technique used in the study) on College Street, one of Toronto’s many major roadways. The bottom 25% of the vehicles studied emitted:

  • 95% of black carbon (or “soot”)
  • 93% of carbon monoxide
  • 76% of volatile organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes, some of which are known-carcinogens

“The most surprising thing we found was how broad the range of emissions was,” says Evans. “As we looked at the exhaust coming out of individual vehicles, we saw so many variations. How you drive, hard acceleration, age of the vehicle, how the car is maintained — these are things we can influence that can all have an effect on pollution.”

What’s the solution?

We have one. Carpooling.

Carpooling cuts down on the number of cars and vehicle son the road. Fewer cars means there is less carbon and other gasses and pollution getting into the air. This protects the environment by keeping the air, water, and land cleaner.

What exactly is Carpooling?

A carpool is two or more commuters sharing a ride in one of their own vehicles. The best carpooling arrangements are very flexible. Carpoolers can either share driving and expenses or one person may drive most or all of the time, in which case the passenger shares operating expenses with the driver.

Why Carpooling?

  • The average carpooler can cut out as much as $600 each month on the cost of their commuting drive.
  • By carpooling just twice a week, 1,600 pounds of greenhouse gases can be kept out of the air each year.
  • If 100 people were to take advantage of the carpool option every day, more than of 1,320 pounds of carbon monoxide and 2,376,000 pounds of carbon dioxide could be removed from the air.
  • Carpooling means fewer cars on the road each day which means less oil usage, and this can help reduce the nation’s dependency on foreign oil.
  • If everyone opted to carpool just one day a week, the traffic on the nation’s major highways and roads would be reduced by as much as 20%.
