Things you Should Know: How Smartphone Manufacturers are Fooling People

2 min readFeb 27, 2020

Smartphone manufacturers make flashy claims whenever they launch any device, irrespective of the segment it belongs to. They boast of the intricacies of its design, its stellar display, powerful camera(s) and processors to position their newest offering as a cut above the rest.

However, this happens to be a part of their brand marketing strategy. In the process, they let several important factors that may not portray their device in a positive light remain ambiguous.

Let’s discuss How smartphone Manufacturers are Fooling People:

Number of Cameras:

The most common fib told to you by mobile makers is related to the feature you love the most. The recent trend of smartphone companies offering devices with dual cameras, triple cameras, quad cameras, and event Penta cameras is playing a huge role in the belief that more lenses mean better pictures.

However, this is simply not true. It’s all a marketing gimmick. More cameras may offer more functionality that is otherwise not possible with a single camera, but if your main camera does not pack a punch, then putting even 10 cameras around it won’t improve the picture quality.

That’s why the Google Pixel 3, with a single camera, is still one of the best camera smartphones available in the market.

Higher Megapixels:

Similarly, a higher megapixel count doesn’t mean better image quality. These days you would find mobile phone under Rs. 10,000 offering up to 48MP cameras, but still capturing low-quality photos.

On the other hand, some other devices with a decent enough 12MP camera can click stunning photos.

Why so? This is because there are several factors, such as the lens, image sensor, sensor size, aperture, software algorithms, and AI that come into play while determining the quality of the picture.

So, while deciding on a camera-centric smartphone, don’t fall for the higher megapixel gimmick!

Different Models, Same Hardware:

Smartphone manufacturers often take customers for a ride by offering new mobile phones with the same old hardware and configuration. With slight changes in design and software, a new phone featuring nearly identical specifications emerges.

For instance, you might have noticed that Realme’s 5s and 5i are both nearly indistinguishable in terms of design, features, and specs. The only thing that differentiates the two is the model name.
