How to improve the SEO of a web page?
What is meant by SEO?
Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving the quality of getting to a web page through a search engine or from another web page.
Ways to improve the SEO of a web page
- By adding a meta description
Adding a unique meta description to your website will increase the chance of having more relevant search traffic. Always try to use a more specific description according to your site content.
2. By adding detailed text content to the link text
Link text is a clickable place that we use to add a hyperlink. When naming a hyperlink always try to add detail text rather than generic text. Then it will help SEO to understand how it will be related to other pages.
3. By adding valid rel-canonical
In a website when multiple pages have the same content search engines will recognize them as duplicate versions of the same page. Most search engines consider these as duplicates of the web view and a mobile view for a particular page.
So what happens is the search engine will select one of the pages as canonical and crawl that page one more time. And by adding a valid canonical link to a webpage we are saying the search engine what page to crawl from the two versions.
4. By adding a valid hreflang link
Most of the websites provide a different version of the same website according to the language and region. Adding a hreflang link by specifying the language will help to search engines identify which version needs the end user to display according to the region and language.
5. Make sure the website is working fine in mobile view
Nowadays most users use their mobile devices to view websites. So when developing a website we need to give more focus on how that site will look likes in the mobile view as well. When ranking the pages search engines consider the fact that the if a particular website is mobile friendly or not. And they rank the pages according to that. Font sizes smaller than 12px is difficult to read on mobile devices. So make sure when deciding the font sizes for mobile view.
6. By adding “alt” tag to images on the web page
For a particular web site, there is a chance that a page will include at least one image. Properly naming those images using with “alt” tag will help to improve the SEO of the page. Also when naming an image always try to use a descriptive name rather than a general name.
For example, for the below image if you gave a name as “children” for the alt tag then SEO might didn’t have a clear idea about what the image is actually about.
But if you name this image as “children are playing basketball on the court” then it will help SEO to get a clear idea about the image and because of that SEO will rank up the page.
