I think he’s being honest, not bitter. Realistically – despite the seductive fantasy that we’re all special snowflakes – we all reside on different points along multiple normal distribution curves of various intellectual and physical abilities. So except for the outliers on each of these dimensions, we are all “condemned” to live fairly normal, unexceptional lives. Now, one could dwell on this and choose to become bitter and depressed, or accept it and find our own pathways to happiness. That, as Yann is pointing out, requires hard work and perseverance. None of this is actually new: the Stoics realised this 2700 years ago. But it is useful to receive the occasional reminder.
