Heavyweight WBA Inter Continental Title Men 12.11.2016 Competition: Scott vs Ortiz live When/Date: 12.11.2016 Time: 2:00 pm repeat: Live

In wake of the heavyweight division’s current rearrangement, Luis “King Kong” Ortiz will be the first player to showcase his talent against Malik Scott this Saturday night and the Cuban contender will do so off the heels of a reform in his own right. The fight will be broadcast live in a matinee edition of HBO’s “Boxing After Dark” (4:00 p.m. ET/ 1 p.m. PT).

“Every now and again, you watch a heavyweight and you think, ‘Wow!’ You look around ringside and a lot of people are shaking. A lot of people are looking at each other about potentially hiding under their seats or looking for the exit. That’s what happens when Luis Ortiz fights. Sometimes when you sit down with a man, you think, ‘You’re a bad man,’ and that’s the feeling I get when I look at Luis Ortiz.”

Those were the words of Eddie Hearn at Thursday afternoon’s final press conference for a card Ortiz will be headlining in Monte Carlo, Monaco. As the managing director of Matchroom Boxing, Hearn recently signed Ortiz after a fallout with Golden Boy Promotions over the summer and, considering the IBF heavyweight titleholder Anthony Joshua fights under the same banner, it seems like Ortiz’s decision to sign with the U.K.-based promoter is inspired by a potential clash with one of the biggest rising stars in the sport.

Ortiz, who reportedly coughed up around one million dollars in order to nullify his contract with Golden Boy, will be fighting in the Eastern Hemisphere for the first time in his career and. although his fights will presumably take place in Europe for the foreseeable future, HBO has decided to continue to follow the narrative of his career.

“For us, we’ve been involved with King Kong here, Luis Ortiz, for a couple of fights now. We’re excited to see his continued trajectory,” said Executive Vice President of HBO Sports Peter Nelson at the presser. “This fight, up against Malik Scott on Saturday night — obviously the conventional wisdom is gonna be that Luis Ortiz is gonna win by knockout — but, as we saw just this week, sometimes conventional wisdom can get pretty unconventional, pretty quickly.”

Referring to Donald Trump becoming President-Elect of the United States of America this week, Nelson isn’t ruling out an upset but remarkably, should Scott topple Ortiz, it’d be a bigger overthrow from an odds standpoint, when compared to Trump’s win over Hillary Clinton. A 22–1 underdog on Saturday night, Scott could be seen as a serviceable journeyman throughout his career and, thanks to the fact that Malik isn’t a known friend of Ortiz, Nelson may have bought himself a competitive fight.

This, of course, is a cynical view of Scott’s last big fight, a WBC title eliminator, against Deontay Wilder in March of 2014. Yet, to call that a “fight” would be a gross misuse of the word.

Ninety seconds into it, Scott was dropped by what was seemingly the first shot landed by Wilder and proceeded to lay down — and stay down — like a wet noodle. Although it was known that Scott and Wilder were good friends beforehand, the sneering could be seen clearly in hindsight as Scott couldn’t even look into Wilder’s eyes in their final face off.
