My moment of epiphany and truth in the Mediterranean Sea

Drawn to the sea, I’ve been finding myself questing more and more for the comfort of that unmistakable blue green backdrop and the buoyancy of spirit that comes with the buoyancy of body. It is said you know you have a problem when you start losing your ability to use common sense. I’m past the point of no return with this one.

I’ve got an addiction I can’t deny and I’ll go through a lot to get my fix.

Have you spent a substantial amount of time alone with the sea? Allowed yourself to be completely at her mercy? Have your eyes gotten drunk on her hues? How did you feel afterwards?

No doubt, if you answered ‘yes’ to any of the first questions, you felt like you were leaving a best friend when the day was over and it was time to go home.

There is scientific truth to our immediate emotional connection to the sea.

It’s been shown to have many of the same nutrients as our own blood plasma. Sea water works with the sunlight to make you healthy, process and make vitamins. It exfoliates our skin and allows nutrients and minerals to be replenished. It helps our immune system and detoxifies our bodies.

More reason to get yourself to the sea as soon as possible.

Recently, I had a “moment”.

I’d been collecting too much emotional ‘data’, I guess you could say, and felt myself going into an emotional, anxious overdrive. You know, the kind where one could easily find themselves making a mountain out of a molehill? I needed to ground myself and unload all the excess data, pronto.

Luckily, I was near a sea. In this rare case of happenstance, I chose to test Her Majesty.

When I would swim one way, the water was blue, so blue, every shade of blue. The sun would twinkle off the water creating a sparkling tapestry in front of me. When I would swim the other way, the sea was green, the most calming aqua and refreshing swatch of every shade of turquoise.

I must have stayed there over an hour, turning one way into the next, rotating myself like I was using the sea to shave bad vibes away. My lungs were clear and I didn’t tire, I could have kept spinning until the sun set. To those on shore, I looked funny. Myself, I was having one crazy meditational, “connect with nature” moment.

When I emerged on shore, an incredible calm swept over me and everything I had been worrying about was put into perspective. All the excess data I was holding onto, I’d left to sink to the bottom of the sea. The water worked with my movement and flushed out toxins, the fresh air helped me think clearer. I slept the best I had in weeks.

The sea pressed a reset button in me that I couldn’t reach on my own.

Now what? I’m home and my access to the sea is null.

We can still reap the benefits of the sea and water just by breathing in warm, misting vapors in the shower. These have negatively charged ions like genuine sea breeze. Taking an Epsom bath will add much needed magnesium into your system, taking away the stress of the day.

Lastly, we can never underestimate the power of taking time with ourselves, in nature, to meditate and focus on our breath. Even putting your feet in the grass in a park in the middle of the city can help you unload excess data. Looking over large bodies of waters, climbing high up to see a beautiful view, there are many ways to reap benefits from nature’s natural medicine.

Be unapologetic and post about your next much needed beach time.

Share those sunset moments and sunrise hues. The world needs to see more beauty. Think about all the benefits you’re getting from your time in the sea and sun and you’ll never take it for granted. You never know who you’ll inspire to leave their cares at the bottom of the sea as well.
