Prefer your hearts torn, still beating, from the chest of your darling Valentine? Prefer your blood red roses barbed with monstrous thorns? Here’s a Valentine’s prompt for people who like their fiction on the dark side.

This is a silly prompt that Ryan Bell and I came up with the other night when we were mucking about in a writing group. Take a sub-genre of horror and write erotica in it. Some horror sub-genres work better than others, but here are a few examples: cosmic, folk, body, existential, gore/slasher, psychological, monster, zombie. Gothic has already crossed over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t try it. It’s the genre granddaddy of getting our fears tangled up with our desires, after all.

I tried out some cosmic erotica. You can look forward to ‘The Smut-Quest of Unknown Kadath’ by H.P. Lurvecraft as a special Valentine’s treat. Have fun writing the very wrongest kind of smut.
