VW ID.Buzz Style in Deep Black Pearl

As I start writing this review I have just handed back my “Try before you buy” weekend rental ID.Buzz. This is partly because I forget things quickly these days, but also to capture my emotional state. That being that I was sad to hand it back. Whatever the more quantitive parts of this review reveal, it’s good to remember this.

The car I got was a 2023 model in Deep Black. It is not a colour I have ever added to the configurator when making my “fantasy builds”. However, there is no denying that it looked good and garnered positive remarks from the family. It was the up-spec Style model with all the trimmings — including 21” alloys.

The first problem I have is framing this review. What standards should I judge this vehicle by. Typically, I use my Jaguar I-PACE as the benchmark. On this occasion, the two vehicles have very different design goals even if their prices are not dissimilar. How about the camper van I owned? That was based on a larger 5.4m Ducato platform. Unladen the weights are only about 100kg in the Buzz’s favour though. A more relevant benchmark was a vehicle I had a long-term loan from Jaguar Land Rover. This was a Land Rover Discovery in 3l diesel form. The best choice though is the Kia EV9 that I test-drove a few months ago.
