Hey John … LinkedIn is mostly a “promise” that has never been fulfilled. It’s also a complete myth — that is being sold everyday by professional Social Media experts and Business Coaches.
Here’s what LinkedIn really is …
- The worlds largest (virtual) file cabinet for resumes … In fact, recruiting is one of the top revenue streams for LinkedIn (of course, it’s a rounding error to the revenue generated from advertising).
- A marketing platform for companies — it allows them have an additional PR stream for announcement and company “news”.
- And the biggest thing LinkedIn is (today) … a huge data repository for Microsoft. 500M+ professionals have a profile on LinkedIn; Plus hundreds of thousands of companies. Microsoft has the ability to look at the real career path — albeit self-reported around the globe. That information was worth billions to them.
LinkedIn is not what it used to be — the reality is, Microsoft doesn’t care — they want and need the data. Look at how LinkedIn has become integrated into Microsoft Office 365 and you will begin to understand.
And for the record, I couldn’t agree more with the premise of you article. LinkIn sucks.
