I know this is about creatives, but this happens across the board. It’s been about a year since I looked at the numbers, but LinkedIn had approximately 500M “users” of their platform — but only 10% were “active” during any given month — and less than 1% of the total user base were “paid” subscribers.
They were worth billions to Microsoft, not from revenue generated by subscription fees, but by the amount of data created on user profiles.
Economics of the internet age are different. It has changed the 80/20 rule to the 95/5 rule, or potentially to the 99/1 rule.
