MovementWorks exists to prove that movement matters. Our work is developed by a qualified dance movement scientist and supported by nationally recognised leading figures in education.
MovementWorks offers DDM programmes across EYFS and Key Stage 1. We are trained also to provide an approved neurophysical assessment and programmmes suitable for Key Stage 1 and 2.
In-school pilot programmes extend across one term with a minimum of a once weekly intervention. The extended programme is delivered across one academic year. In both cases, it is possible to monitor and scientifically evaluate group development and individual case studies.
WHAT IS DDM?
The MovementWorks Developmental Dance Movement Programme is innovative whole body learning. The programme has been designed by an experienced dance practitioner and qualified movement research scientist.
The MovementWorks Developmental Dance Movement Programme is offered specifically for learning based environments for toddlers, preschool, EYFS and Key Stage 1. Physical development features as a prime learning area in the 2012 EYFS re structure in recognition that without optimal opportunity, school readiness and learning progress can be negatively affected. Previous UK research findings suggest that up to 40% of children of Reception age may not have reached the level of skill required to demonstrate key physical developmental markers. Conversely an appropriate and early intervention is likely to have a positive impact on lifelong learning potential. The Developmental Dance Movement Programme is designed specifically for this purpose and facilitates progress checks. It incorporates the latest neuroscientific research, principals of neurophysical psychology and Montessori pedagogy. Grounded in educational theory the Developmental Dance Movement Programme aims to support, anchor and accelerate learning through carefully crafted kinaesthetic (whole body) tasks which simultaneously address physical and cognitive development. The Programme provides developmentally appropriate and gender-balanced movement experiences, as students increase their physical, social and cognitive functioning whilst they integrate the developmental dance movement with academics.

“I first became aware of the Movement Works programme at the Lewisham Headteachers Summer Curriculum review. I was fascinated by the content and was keen to see the programme in action, which Ali very kindly facilitated.
Upon viewing two sessions with Reception and a Year One class, I was so impressed I immediately booked sessions for our Nursery and Reception children for the following academic year. What really impressed me in the sessions was the wide variety of activities which engaged every child, including those with complex Special Educational Needs.
Once the sessions started at St Saviour’s RC Primary School (Lewisham) the first thing we noticed was how much the children enjoyed the sessions. We have two children with profound ASD who accessed the sessions and showed real progression over the year.
What has really impressed us over the year is how well the programme fits into our EYFS provision — Fine Motor skills are greatly enhanced by the sessions, the sessions account for every learning style whether it be auditory, visual or kinaesthetic, our phonics work is consolidated in every session and the children’s independence is always encouraged.
Another huge plus is the way Movement Works communicate with our EYFS teachers. Far from being “extra work”, the way the sessions are taught and recorded actually help our staff build their EYFS profile, the dialogue in constant and comprehensive.
Since working with Movement Works we have seen our EYFS GLD scores rise from 48% in 2013 to 72% in 2015. I have no doubt that part of this is down to the superb sessions delivered by Ali and her team.

MovementWorks at Marjorie McClure School
MovementWorks shares the same ethos as our school — inclusive practice which gives all pupils a chance to enjoy and have fun learning and exploring new experiences.
They are endorsed by diagnostic dynamics and offer a programme designed to get pupils moving in different ways. They were established to provide and promote quality movement education with particular emphasis on the young, their carers, educators and the community. Their aim is to reach those who may not have access to movement based learning.
MovementWorks developmental dance sessions (led by Alison) provide a weekly lesson for a mixed group of our primary pupils, all of whom have complex learning and / or physical and sensory needs. The sessions are fun and creative and allow all our pupils to enjoy moving and using their imagination to develop different shapes with their bodies.
For our visually impaired pupils, the MovementWorks sessions allow them to develop physical coordination and visual skills such as scanning and moving in an unknown environment. In addition it supports listening skills, partner and team working, self expression and self confidence.
Our pupils have gained greater self confidence when moving around our site and increased their motor skills by copying Ali and her movements as well as learning to use their bodies or special equipment. Some pupils use walking frames but have learnt to let go of their frames in order to stand and do some of the dance movements with their arms.
All the children who take part in the Tuesday sessions with MovementWorks really enjoy the experience and have a lot of fun taking part in the dances as well as learning and developing their wider physical skills.
