How to Run a Marathon

  1. Read Born to Run.
  2. Get your snacks.
  3. Believe you can do it.
  4. Run 20 miles for your longest training run.
  5. Break it into chunks: half marathon, 7 more miles, you’re at 20, you’ve never run past 20 before, it’s all new now.
  6. Feel your body.
  7. When you’re tired, high-five a little kid.
  8. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
  9. Take Lisa’s* advice: “When you feel badly during your race, just give it time. Have something to eat or drink, and wait. Eventually something will shift and you’ll feel better.”
  10. Ask someone wonderful to wait for you at the finish.
  11. Drink some Gatorade. You’re not too good for it.
