Self Promotion = Self Sabotage

When people commend themselves, it doesn’t count for much. The important thing is for the Lord to commend them. 2 Corinthians 10:18 NLT
This verse stuck out to me this morning as I was reading. Then several other scriptures bombarded my mind:
Let someone else praise you, not your own mouth a stranger, not your own lips. Proverbs 27:2
Don’t demand an audience with the king or push for a place among the great. It’s better to wait for an invitation to the head table than to be sent away in public disgrace. Proverbs 25:6–7 NLT
Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he will come and say, ‘Friend, we have a better place for you!’ Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Luke 14:10–11 NLT
All of these scriptures (and I’m sure there are more) make it clear that self promotion is really self sabotage.
- Don’t pat your self on the back
- Don’t praise yourself
- Don’t demand an audience with someone
- Don’t place yourself at the head of the table
In our selfie world we are encouraged to be shameless in promoting ourselves if we want to survive or stand out. In the work place, among our friends, and sadly even in ministry.
In the Kingdom of God we should continue to humble ourselves and wait on God’s promotion in order to stay the course.
Day and night difference right?
