Lessons learnt from daily chess practices

Besides exercise, why playing chess should be part of your daily routine.

  1. Learn how to place your resources across your playing field.
    With 64 squares, 16 pieces for each player, 6 different sets of pieces with their own unique strength and ability; chess mimics life. Each pieces is always dependent on each other to create a strong attack or defence.
    So is life; you have a set of resources, your opponents & landscape would have almost similar playing pieces. Being able to constantly place your resources well would help you achieve the most optimal results.
  2. Just like life, there’s no reset or replay.
    If you choose to play with a companion or with a mode on your chess app that does not allow you to backtrack your moves, you’ll understand the importance of making each moves count. And likewise, in life you can’t backtrack your previous moves either.
  3. It’s not just about what you plan to do.
    Personally, I frequently overestimate my own intelligence and abilities. However, in chess, it’s more about anticipating what your opponent is planning to do then what you intend to do.
    Likewise in life, we have this grand plan of what we wish to accomplish. However, in order to execute those plans well, the ability to anticipate the changes in the execution field maybe the difference between failure & success.
  4. Never underestimate the pawns.
    While pawns appear to be the weakest of the chess pieces, when well-placed, they could be the most useful piece. Because they are the weakest, it’s also easier to ignore the threat that they could possibly pose.
    In life, do not underestimate the strength of the ‘weaker’ resources. Find ways to place them strategically to maximize your winning chances.
  5. Do not focus your attack/defence strategy on only around the queen.
    The queen has the ability to move across in almost all directions through the entire length of the board. Due to this ability, chess players build attack/defence strategies around a single piece. This over-dependence on a single resource makes the player extremely vulnerable & easily exploited. In fact, if need be, do not hesitate to sacrifice the queen for the bigger strategem.
    Likewise in life, do not be too dependent on what appears to be your most valuable asset. Be prepared to treat the resource like any other resources that you have while fully understanding its strength and merits.
  6. Deliberate well and often.
    Sometimes, a move in chess is avoided because it is at a loss. However, in the excitement of an idea or a way forward, it’s easy to forget why you have been avoiding the former move; thereby making the mistake of executing it.
    A chess game is lost not because of a good attack but usually because of lapse in defence.
    Likewise; in life, it may be due to the lapse in concentration, focus or not being careful of the smaller details that causes failure.
  7. Learn and do not repeat the same mistakes.
    Playing chess daily will enable the individual to recognize some of the more familiar patterns. Being able to remember the mistakes will help to ensure that it does not repeat itself.
    In life, if you do not learn from your mistake, you’re bound to repeat them & pay the same costly price.
