"You know when Tiffani Dork said humans are the worst species on earth, I didn’t believe her," Kunle said, his voice laced with anger and disappointment as he tried to process the sight he was seeing.

"But now that I've seen you and how cruel you can be, I have no doubt whatsoever that she was right all along, and I was wrong for not believing her."

Tunji's eyes dropped, unable to meet Kunle's gaze.

"For God's sake, Tunji, do you have blood flowing through your veins at all?" Kunle continued.

"Like, honestly, I need you to place your hand on your chest to find out if you have something beating in you. All humans are meant to have a heart beating in them, and I strongly doubt that you have one."

Kunle paused, taking a deep breath. "Okay, you know what? I'm giving you a chance to explain what I'm seeing now." He pointed to Wunmi on the hospital bed, her head heavily wrapped in bandages, her leg elevated on a slider, and her arm in an arm wedge. She was sleeping, sedated.

"Yes, I did this to Wunmi," Tunji began, his voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't exactly enjoy doing it, but I had to protect her."

"Protect her from what?" Kunle asked, his anger and frustration evident.

Tunji stared at his wife on the sick bed before responding. "Wunmi is my wife, Kunle. You know how much I went through in the hands of women before I finally found Wunmi."

"I know, I know," Kunle interrupted. "Nigbayen wa nko?." He added in Yoruba, confused at the direction Tunji was headed.

Tunji continued, "Even when I found Wunmi... you know what she made me go through before she finally agreed to marry me... I love Wunmi so much that I can kill for her. I will do absolutely anything for her. There's no extent in this life that I wouldn't go to for her."

Kunle's confusion turned to impatience. "For God's sake, Tunji, I'm not asking you to tell me about your love for your wife. If anything, we all know you love her so much, which is why I'm still shocked to believe that you did this to her.

In your defense, you said you were protecting her, right?"

Tunji nodded.

"Great! Now tell me what exactly were you protecting her from?" Kunle pressed, his voice rising.

Tunji hesitated before speaking. "I was protecting her from falling into the wrong hands. She has this colleague at work, Wale.

They were meant to go on a work seminar at Abuja for two weeks, just him and her. They were supposed to leave today. I tried talking her out of it, but she wouldn’t listen."

All I wanted was for her to stay with me and not go to Abuja with her male colleague who I can swear I’ve caught throwing seductive looks at her once or twice when I used to pick Wunmi up at work.”

Tunji’s voice dropped to a whisper. "I spilled oil on the tile where I knew she’d follow first thing in the morning with her sleepy eyes. She wouldn’t notice the oil on the floor, and then... and then she woke up to get prepared this morning, stepped on the floor on her way to the bathroom, slipped, fell, hit her head on the floor, and twisted her leg and arm in the process.

I didn’t mean to hurt her that bad. I thought she was only going to twist her leg and be in a little bit of pain, so she wouldn’t go to Abuja with Wale."

Kunle’s face contorted . "Tunji!" he called, his voice laced with revulsion.

To be continued in Part 2 tomorrow.
