In today’s world 1.6–2.0 million people are working day and night to develop games and work online to generate income.

These people need good equipment to work better and in today’s dynamic world and brisk life, everyone wants to save time and perform their work smartly and efficiently here desktops PC lose a point, and laptops take an edge to them. Nowadays, every developer seeks a laptop for their work to be efficient, as laptops can be carried easily.

Basic Requirements

For game development, underpowered laptops do not perform well and the basic programs for game development lag in these devices, for professional user this experience is pathetic so for their work they need a better laptop for an enhanced experience and better working of developing programs.

Some important components in a laptop that count the most are given below.

Processor

The processor is by far the most important part of a laptop which is essential for a better game development experience if the processor is slow it leads to lag in the user experience of the developing programs.

For a superior feel of performance, the laptop should have at least

- A quad-core processor of Intel or equivalent (For 2D game development)

And

- A core i5 8th generation or Ryzen 5 3600x or above (For 3D game development)

RAM

Random Access Memory serves as a workspace in a system, the more workspace is easy is to perform the task and the faster it is. In game development, RAM also serves an important function in providing a better user experience to a developer

- 8 GBs of RAM is more than enough (for 2D game development)

While

- 16–32 GBs RAM is recommended (for 3D game development)

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)

Graphics card plays a very important role in developing a game after all it has to design and render the images and video animations used in a game.

- At least 2 GBs of gDDR5 of VRAM or above is required (For 2D game development). Like NVIDIA GTX 750Ti or AMD Radeon rx 550 2GB.

And

- At least 8 GBs of gDDR5 of VRAM or above is required (For 3D game development). Like NVIDIA GTX 1080 8GB or AMD Radeon rx 580 8GB.

Screen Resolution

While developing a game this aspect is an important one as the developer needs the screen to be at least of the resolution that the game is being designed with, for better and high-resolution games the quality screen is essential likewise low-resolution screens will also work for the low-resolution games.

- A 720p resolution will work fine (For 2D game development)

While

- At least 1080p IPS display or above is required (for a 3D or FPS type game development)

Refresh Rate

The screen refresh rate must be at least the FPS (Frames Per Second) used in game to provide a lag-free experience while developing a game and avoiding bugs and glitches.

A screen with a refresh rate of 60 Hz is optimal (For 2D game development)

A screen of at least 144 Hz is required (For 3D or FPS type game development)

Storage Space

A bulk of storage space is essential for developing a game after all it has to store all of the game’s data which goes on increasing with development steps. For a stutter free experience, the HDD is not recommended as it uses old mechanical technology to read and write and consumes more power, instead a SSD (Solid State Drive) is optimal for the tasks like rendering and game development as it is power efficient and provides a 20 times faster speed than a normal HDD. An average PC game size is 40–50 GBs and to develop them we need more space while less storage space is required for game development of a game less than 20 GB is also less, at the end the storage space you want is just your preference, but these figures are optimal for development,

- A 512 GB SSD for the low-end games

And

- A 1 TB or above SSD for high end games

Battery Time

People prefer Laptops over PCs just because they can be carried over and in this regard, the battery time is one of the major considerations of a game developer or any laptop user. The battery time does not affect the functionality of a laptop yet increases the convenience of a user as he can use it for a long time and he finds peace of mind in this regard. As the game developing work is stressful for your laptop it may consume more power in comparison to other tasks.

- For any type of game development the optimal battery time is 4- 8 hours

The above covered aspects are the most important considerations when you tend to buy a laptop for game development, in the end, it is your own personal preference but in my opinion below is the list of some best gaming laptops in 2021 for the development of games
